I want to go into advertising but I’m not sure about whether or not it will involve drawing, because I’m not that good at drawing.

  1. I can’t draw a stick figure and I was the advertising manager for a $220 million international company. If you can come up with ideas, someone else can commit them to paper. The other poster was right about using the computer for the work. It is not like it was 20 or 30 years ago when you did need art skills.

  2. in advertising, drawing may be compulsory. but that doesn’t mean portraits or picture paintings. usually, you will be only drawing basic shapes or lines – what is more needed in advertising is a good concept, creativity and charisma. anyway, drawing is a skill and not necessarily a talent – which means it can be learned if you work on it.

  3. Hi dear, drawing in advertising is not so important but it does play a helping hand in designing new logos, ads, messages and stuff. Don’t worry, you can do some short course on drawing along with doing a job.

  4. This all depends on whether you want to actually create the advertisements or create the concepts for advertisement. For example, do you want to actually create the commercial or do you want to create the plan to get to the commercial.

Take Gatorade for example. Marketing people would come up with the idea of G has this great sports drinks that sports people, dancers, drink when they are thirsty or working hard. Advertising then came up with the commercial showing all the famous people we know.

So if you want to create the concept go into marketing. If you want to create the ads, the commercials etc go into advertising (the point of school is to help you become better at the drawing and computer graphics)

If you want to do the actual creation of the advertisement, and you feel like your drawing will hold you back, go take an art class =) That’s what they’re there for. Good luck

  5. No but you need to be creative and have basic graphic design & drawing skills, though this you can always learn.

  6. Hi.

If you are not good at drawing, then don’t worry about it, that’s what graphic designers are for.

If you’ve got the skills for the field, then you should go for it. Advertising is just part of the business industry, so you really need business skills.

If you have that, "business savvy", then you should be able to make it in advertising. If you’ve got a degree or some training, then that will help even more.

So, unless, you intend to be a designer of some sort, leave that stuff to the creative types and concentrate on the business aspects of advertising.

    Hope that helps.

  8. Drawing well helps you to conveys your message better, but the graphic designer will be the one ultimately putting the add on paper. The Advertiser comes up with the idea after doing research on what would be a good fit for the product, service or brand being advertised. As an advertiser you should just be able to communicate your idea to the graphic designer.

On that note, advertising is actually a very wide field and does not only include magazine adds and billboards, it includes tv adds, internet video adds and many more. look around on the internet a bit and find out about the field. When I first started studying I planned to eventually do something totally different in the advertising field than what I am doing now.
